THE MOUNTAINS THAT HOLD ROOTMERE
A colossal ring of slate peaks, dark stone and forested ledges enclosing Rootmere Hollow. It protects the valley from the wider world—but makes every route through Mercy Cleft matter.

THE INHERITED DEFENSE
A vast black-and-dull-iron barrier built into the mountainside at Mercy Cleft. Its charcoal panels, buttresses and gatehouse keep watch over Rootmere’s only ordinary approach.

THE ONLY PRACTICAL WAY THROUGH
A deep, rugged cleft of dark stone, wind and runoff: the single workable passage through Stoneward Ring. Trade, travel and escape all converge at this narrow opening.

THE GATE THAT MAKES DEPARTURE COUNT
An immense closed black-iron cage gate set deep within Ironward’s arch. It is Rootmere’s sole established ordinary gate, making every departure visible, controlled and consequential.

THE FIRST WARNING LINE
ROOTMERE’S QUIET DEFENSE
A handmade forest warning circuit of bent reeds, bone chimes, ash marks, cords and cleared sight gaps. It can detect an ordinary crossing—but not every danger moving through the woods.
